Clean Air:
In thinking about clean air, I look forward to a day when the majority of cars and trucks on the road will be 100% electric or at least plug-in hybrid. I think this will help air quality significantly. As a daily pedestrian, I am frequently subjected to puffs of exhaust fumes coming from diesel trucks, scooters, buses, and more. I can imagine that cyclists have the same experience. Diesel particulates are known carcinogens according to the World Health Organization. As we encourage more people to walk and bike, we must continue to clean up the air at the same time.
Hybrid cars are intelligent in that they shut off at stop lights and do not idle. Electric cars are the ultimate example of this. Texting-while-idling is a new phenomena that wouldn't matter if cars were cleaner and more intelligent. I am encouraged by the wonderful CA Senate bill SB 1204 sponsored by Senator Ricardo Lara that passed in 2014 enabling Cleaner Trucks and Buses with zero or near-zero emissions in CA. This must be the future.
We hope to see you at the awards!
