Why events?
On a personal note, why do I participate in so many events?  I often get asked this question. I believe that an event can be a wonderful and unparalleled catalyst to learn about a cause, an organization, an issue, a person, a solution and more that can help to save the planet. It is rare to fall out of bed in the morning and say, “Hmm, I think I will learn about the Amazon rainforest today.”  It just doesn’t happen. Life is too busy. Or maybe you do, but you are, um, different. An event is an opportunity to bring people together for a fun celebration.  Did I mention it has to be fun?  There have to be several wow factors that delight the crowd and make the party a worthwhile alternative to watching Planet Green at home.

WildAid I fell into the environmental event world by chance. When I first decided to give the cubicle the boot and replace the gray office with the gray whale, my question was “What do I care most about?” The answer at the time was tigers. Endangered tigers and lions. So I called WildAid and asked, “What can I do?”  They needed a launch party thrown in San Francisco, and the rest is history in the making as they say.

I like doing events that are complimentary. Free is always the right price!  Movie screenings and premieres are some of my favorite events because (almost) nothing surpasses the experience of watching a great film. Sometimes events are fundraisers and have a ticket price benefiting a charity.  I have a hard time asking for money. Between asking someone for funds or donating something myself, I will often do the latter much to the horror of my financial advisor who is always telling me to “pull back.”  Why should I when the planet needs help now?  If I wait until I am 80 to start trying to protect the forests for example, they might be all gone. I would rather help now. That is just my personal choice. It absolutely doesn’t have to be anyone else’s.

Over time, I have learned that many people actually want to donate money to causes they care about.  A shocking discovery I know!  Not everyone is passionate about every cause, and that is a good thing.  If everyone were passionate about the oceans above all else, then who would put education, global health, or climate change as their No. 1?   We need to divide and conquer. The oceans are probably a bad example because they need more champions. They are easy to forget about because they seem fine at the surface. 70% of our planet is remarkably covered by oceans. Anyway, when people become connected with opportunities to make a difference in areas they care deeply about, that is party nirvana. And it doesn’t have to be about money. There are so many ways to make a positive impact such as volunteering, writing a blog post, and spreading the word. Even just being aware and caring is huge.

Occasionally, I get to attend a party with absolutely no purpose where I have no role except to have fun. My friend and I overdosed on frosting at the last one.  Correction:  I OD’ed on frosting and she OD’ed on cake. If there is a dance floor and excellent music involved, I am the happiest guest there.  A green girl can let her hair down from time to time, but only when the planet isn’t looking.

Heroes are Good

Superman_car When the going gets tough, the tough get heroes. Al Gore is one of my heroes. He has all the qualities a modern superhero should have:  an enlightened vision, willingness to take on the villains, persistence, and dashing good looks - at least I think so.

Here are highlights from Al Gore’s speech A Generational Challenge to Repower America. A member of Al's Hollywood entourage, Will.i.am even came from LA to hear him speak.

If you don’t like Al Gore, then let's try to imagine that someone else is talking. One of the key things we must do is de-politicize the environment. Taking a vitamin pill is not a political issue. Going to the gym, drinking clean water, or breathing clean air are not political issues. Living on a healthy planet is not a political issue, or is it?

A grassy park brings people from all walks of life together. The day that the environment became a “left” issue was the day that we started having problems. We do not have to choose between the environment and jobs. Green jobs hold great promise for a renewed, self-sufficient, prosperous U.S. economy.  The environment can unify us, not divide us.

I admit that the former Vice President may not be the best person to de-politicize green and clean, but here is the best of Al:

Sun & Wind & Geo Rule: “Enough solar energy falls on the surface of the earth every 40 minutes to meet 100 percent of the entire world's energy needs for a full year. Enough wind power blows through the Midwest corridor every day to also meet 100 percent of electricity demand. Geothermal energy is capable of providing enormous supplies of electricity for America.”

Repower America:  “Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years.”

We Are Doing What?: “We are borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that's got to change.

As Oil Prices Rise, Sun Prices Fall: “When demand for oil and coal increases, their price goes up. When demand for solar cells increases, the price often comes down. That’s the difference. Sunlight is free forever.”

Green Jobs:  “When we send money to foreign countries to buy nearly 70 percent of the oil we use every day, they build new skyscrapers and we lose jobs. When we spend that money building solar arrays and windmills, we build competitive industries and gain jobs here at home.”  [Huge applause]

Who is Benefiting from the Status Quo?“There are those who will tell us this can't be done. Some of the voices we hear are the defenders of the status quo - the ones with a vested interest in perpetuating the current system, no matter how high a price the rest of us will have to pay.”

American People Want Change:  “To those who say the challenge is not politically viable: I suggest they go before the American people and try to defend the status quo. Then bear witness to the people's appetite for change. The time is now."

Status Quo is a No Go:  "I for one do not believe our country can withstand 10 more years of the status quo. Our families cannot stand 10 more years of gas price increases. Our workers cannot stand 10 more years of job losses and outsourcing of factories. Our economy cannot stand 10 more years of sending $2 billion every 24 hours to foreign countries for oil. Our soldiers and their families cannot take another 10 years of repeated troop deployments to dangerous regions that just happen to have large oil supplies.”

Plug-Ins For All:  We could increase the value and efficiency of the grid by helping our struggling auto giants switch to the manufacture of plug-in electric cars.”

Policy Matters:  “I have long supported a sharp reduction in payroll taxes with the difference made up in CO2 taxes. We should tax what we burn, not what we earn."

Drilling Won’t Matter:  “When people rightly complain about higher gasoline prices, we propose to give more money to the oil companies and pretend that they're going to bring gasoline prices down. It will do nothing of the sort, and everyone knows it.”

China is Gulping Oil:  “If you want to know the truth about gasoline prices, here it is: the exploding demand for oil, especially in places like China, is overwhelming the rate of new discoveries by so much that oil prices are almost certain to continue upward over time no matter what the oil companies promise.”

A Generational Call:  “This is a generational moment. A moment when we decide our own path. We're committed to changing not just light bulbs, but laws. And laws will only change with leadership.”

Man on the Moon, Man on Earth:  Just as we put a man on the moon in 1969, “we must now lift our nation to reach another goal that will change history. Our civilization depends upon us embarking on a new journey of exploration and discovery [to end our reliance on fossil-based fuels]. We have an opportunity to take a giant leap for humankind."

Thinking about this, it does seem almost silly how wedded we are to fossil fuels, which will run out.  They are fossils and by definition, they are old and finite and dirty. Decayed organic matter. Would we burn a cemetery for energy?  That is essentially what we are doing. How does that celebrate life?  The sun shines down on us every day. The wind blows every day. The Earth's core boils every day. We can take advantage of these “free” renewable and clean sources of energy every day.

Sometimes I feel like Lois Lane, waiting for Al Gore to swoop down and take me for a ride high above the clouds to save the planet.  We need Al Gores in our life to help us envision a brighter future. But in our modern society, every person who embraces the connection between ourselves and the planet is a hero in his/her own right. So is every person who makes 1-2 small changes or spreads the word about how ecofabulous it can be to live a healthy lifestyle. Going forward, we need champions for change, not defenders of the status quo. We need heroes like Al Gore and like all of us.

55 Million Acres Protected

In an extraordinary announcement yesterday, the Ontario government has agreed to protect 55 million acres of the vast Northern Boreal Forest in Canada from mining and development. This is 50% of Ontario’s pristine yet threatened Northern Boreal Forest, and an area half the size of California.  Now that is something to celebrate!

BorealForest

Here are some jaw-dropping facts:

Big55 million acres of the largest intact forest remaining on Earth are now protected from development.

Carbon12.5 million tonnes of CO2 is sequestered each year by the Northern Boreal forest.

WaterThe Boreal Forest ranks No. 1 in storing freshwater (in wetlands and lakes) and carbon (in trees and soil) compared to all other terrestrial ecosystems.

People28 First Nations indigenous communities live in the Boreal Forest.

AnimalsMore than 200 animals live in the Northern Boreal, such as the bald eagle, wolverine, lake sturgeon, caribou, hundreds of songbird species, and the polar bear.

We don’t often hear about the Boreal Forest, which is a continuous belt of conifer trees across North America and Eurasia. What kinds of trees live there?  Firs, pines, and spruces for example.  Basically trees that have a cone. Perhaps the Boreal could be nicknamed the Great Conehead forest.

Over the last 3 years, ForestEthics has campaigned to raise the profile of the Boreal Forest worldwide.  They reached out to over 500 wood and paper customers including Limited Brands, Staples, and Lowes, and they supported the First Nations in their struggle to keep their natural home.

“The government of Ontario’s commitment to protect the Northern Boreal Forest raises the bar for environmental protection across Canada and around the world,” said Todd Paglia, executive director of ForestEthics.

There is still work to do to protect the Southern Boreal from accelerated logging, but ForestEthics and other environmental organizations like the Pew Environment Group are on it. If yesterday was any indication, 2008 is going to be a good year for the forests.

Save the date Tuesday September 30 for the annual ForestEthics party in San Francisco celebrating the launch of the Do Not Mail campaign to help curtail junk mail, save 100 million trees per year, and take back our mailboxes.  Bring your junk mail for shredding and recycling!  I guarantee it will be fun, or you can give my address to the catalog companies.  www.forestethics.org

A Charmone Cinderella Story

If Cinderella had been wearing one of Charmone’s Fall 08 Collection shoes, she would have never left her slipper behind at the ball.

Charmone-natp

A favorite of eco-celebrities like Natalie Portman, this Charmone collection features stunning metallic designs from gold, silver, and bronze to head-turning pink and Stardust blue.  The seductive savannah was Charmone’s muse this season.  Popular silhouettes are also back including the Darjeeling bootie and cutting-edge Cezanne peep-toe heel.

The three pairs of Charmone stilettos in my closet never fail to turn heads when they see the light of day, or the spotlight of a cocktail party.  I love them.  People say, “Nice shoes!” and I can respond, “Thanks, and they are eco-friendly!”  They are shocked, and frankly I still am too that planet-chic shoes can be so darn beautiful.

Charmone08 What is eco-charming about Charmone shoes?  They are 100% vegan and cruelty-free (no leather) and handcrafted of high-quality Italian microfibers in Italy, Brazil, and LA.  Sweatshop-free of course.  These luxe beauties incorporate water-based glue and nickel-free hardware, without any undesirable PVC or chromium.  Plus, Charmone shoes are breathable and lightweight with gorgeous European designs.  The proof that beauty doesn’t have to be painful for the planet is in the foot.

And wearing Charmone just might make a prince show up.

You can view Charmone’s fabulous footwear at eco-fashion boutiques nationwide or online at www.charmone.com

Swim Away Home

This weekend at Moss Beach in Northern California, 4 rehabilitated baby harbor seals and 2 young sea lions made their way back into the ocean, after being nursed back to health by the Marine Mammal Center.

Seal_MarineMammalCenterv3

The cage doors opened and the sea lion pups made a direct line for the waves. Poof, they were gone!  The baby harbor seals, on the other hand, were far more timid. “Where are we?” they seemed to wonder.  “What do we do now?”  The bewildered look on their faces upon re-entering the ocean was priceless. They continued to swim, play, and dive around Moss Beach for hours.  Luckily, there is an established harbor seal colony nearby that will teach these wide-eyed creatures the ropes.

The four seal beauties had satellite tags on their heads, which explained their funny-looking hats. Scientists will be able to track where the harbor seals travel for one year and make sure that they are ok.

I highly recommend a visit to the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve near Half Moon Bay at low tide for some spectacular tide pooling.

Based on the vibrant health of this outgoing class, the Marine Mammal Center clearly does a wonderful job rehabilitating lost and injured seals, sea lions, and an occasional dolphin.  The staff feeds the rescued animals in a special way that does not domesticate them, thereby enabling them to rejoin wild ocean life. Based in the Marin Headlands in Sausalito with a new center, the organization has rescued and treated over 12,000 animals since 1975 and reached over 100,000 school children with their marine science education programs. I hope you will get to experience the magic of seeing a newly-healthy baby harbor seal swim away home to the sea.
