Ever wonder what is in those cosmetics we put on our
skin? Me too. That is why I was thrilled
to learn about the newly released Skin Deep 3.0 Database by the Environmental Working
Group. It is a fabulous safety guide for 25,000 personal care products. Pick
your favorite skin care item and search away. 1 is the safest score. 10 is the
worst.
I really like how the results per product also tell you what
% of similar products have better scores. Scroll down and you will see the
Ingredient Breakdown. For instance, for OPI nail polish, you see the two big
hazardous chemicals of Dibutyl Phthalate and Formaldehyde listed as 10's. Gulp.
For more people-friendly nail polish, check out the SpaRitual
and Sante Kosmetics. No big red flashing light no-no ingredients. And beautiful
colors.
Note that the FDA doesn't require companies to test their products
for safety before selling to the public. Hmmm...this seems like a good thing to
get changed. You would think "personal care products" would be tested and safe
already, no?
A big ah-ha moment for me was when I realized why skin
patches work in general. Consider the motion sickness patch, the birth control
patch, and the nicotine patch. They work because what you put on your skin goes
into your body and affects your health. Ah ha! Before this moment, I had
assumed that beauty and skin products were superficial. That is what the
cosmetics companies want us to believe. "Look how beautiful you look," they
gush. But what are those ingredients doing to us on the inside? Thanks to the EWG's invaluable Skin Deep Database, we can find out.
Also worth a look is the amazing Teens For Safe Cosmetics group. They recently
held a lively Project Prom rally in Union Square complete with prom dresses, combat boots,
and safe beauty makeovers. Those combat boots came in handy when a
thief tried to run off with some of the goods!
Their impressive Jessica Assaf is a teen on a
safe cosmetics mission. She played a key role in the passage of the first Safe
Cosmetics Act of 2005 signed into law in California by Governor Schwarzenegger. For this, she won the prestigious Brower Youth Award
for Environmental Leadership in 2006. And she was only 15!
